Truly Outside The Box

Want to invest in Tesla, a vineyard, or a new Kiwi business? These are just some of the ideas suggested at the latest JUNO Exchange.

The venue was The Box café; the topic was ‘Outside the Box’; and the ideas shared were truly outside the box. The Autumn JUNO Exchange held on Thursday evening, 28 March, was an exercise in innovative thinking, offering investors fresh ideas for their portfolios.

More than 70 people attended the seminar, to hear four experts. It was MC-ed by JUNO Founder and Publisher Jacqueline Taylor.

Wealth adviser Simon Hepple, of Pie Funds, spoke about why you need to diversify your portfolio beyond the traditional asset classes of shares, bonds, fixed interest, and property.

With volatility affecting the share market, there was a lot of interest in CMC Markets General Manager Chris Smith’s talk. He covered the popular commodity lithium and the fact that everyone probably carries some of it in their pocket. It’s used for batteries for mobile technology, and also for the growing electric car market.

He also covered concerns that the big tech stocks –  Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Google – are dominating the share market and that we’re about to see the first US$1 trillion companies.

Grant Payton of MyFarm looked in the opposite direction from tech – back to nature, and ways of investing in farms, vineyards, and kiwifruit or apple orchards. The company offers investors the chance to invest in agriculture, without actually owning the land and caring for crops.

The final speaker, Simeon Burnett, CEO and co-founder of Snowball Effect, talked about this private equity marketplace, which gives you the chance to invest in new and innovative Kiwi businesses, to help them grow.

The next JUNO Exchange event is on Wednesday 13 June at 6pm. Put the date into your calendar now, because the events sell out in hours
